What Does an All-Inclusive Big Five Safari in South Africa Cost?

Two safari lodges. Two very different nightly rates...

But are you comparing the same holiday?

One rate may cover your accommodation. Another may include your meals, morning and afternoon game drives and much of what happens between them.

When comparing Big Five safari prices in South Africa, the nightly rate only tells part of the story.

At Karongwe Private Game Reserve, your day begins with experienced safari guides and trackers heading into the bush, continues over meals and time at the lodge, and draws you back into the reserve as the afternoon light changes.

Understanding what’s included — and what isn’t — is the starting point for comparing the cost of that experience.

What Are You Paying for on a Big Five Safari?

Safari rates vary considerably depending on the reserve, accommodation, season and activities included.

An accommodation-only rate might initially look more affordable, but meals, guided game drives, conservation fees and transfers can change the overall cost.

An all-inclusive safari brings many of these elements together, making it easier to understand what you’re paying for before you arrive.

The important question isn’t simply how much a safari costs per night. It’s what that nightly rate gives you.

 All-Inclusive vs. Pay-Per-Activity: What’s the Difference?

An all-inclusive safari brings several elements of your stay together in one rate. Depending on the lodge and package, this may include accommodation, meals, beverages and scheduled game drives.

With pay-per-activity pricing, accommodation and certain experiences are charged separately. This allows travellers to choose which activities to book, although the final cost depends on what they add to their stay.

Neither approach automatically guarantees a lower overall price. The important distinction is understanding what’s included in the rate you’re comparing.

At Karongwe, accommodation, meals and twice-daily guided game drives form part of the all-inclusive safari offering. Selected 2027 packages also include scheduled transfers and expanded beverage inclusions, depending on the lodge and booking conditions.

Compare the complete stay, not just the nightly rate.

What Does an All-Inclusive Safari at Karongwe Include?

At Karongwe, the safari extends well beyond your accommodation.

Set within the UNESCO-recognised Kruger to Canyons Biosphere near Hoedspruit, this private Big Five reserve is shaped by six river systems and a variety of habitats. Alongside the Big Five, the reserve is home to cheetah, African wild dog and an abundance of other wildlife.

Six distinctive safari lodges offer different ways to experience this landscape, while twice-daily guided game drives and dining form part of the stay.

Twice-Daily Game Drives with Guides and Trackers

Your morning game drive begins while much of the bush is still waking.

Your guide and tracker work together, reading tracks, listening for alarm calls and interpreting the smaller details that can lead to a sighting.

In the afternoon, you head out again. The light changes, temperatures begin to fall and different animals become active.

At Karongwe, scheduled morning and afternoon game drives are part of the safari experience rather than an activity you need to arrange separately each day.

And while nobody can promise which animals you’ll encounter, exploring the reserve with people who know its landscape brings an entirely different dimension to game viewing.

Meals, Drinks and Time at the Lodge

A safari isn’t spent entirely on a game-drive vehicle.

Between drives, there is breakfast, lunch, time beside the pool and the opportunity to enjoy your lodge before heading out again.

Dinner brings another part of the experience into focus, whether you’re dining beneath the stars or enjoying an evening at the lodge.

Karongwe’s all-inclusive offering brings accommodation and dining together with your scheduled game drives. The applicable rate determines which beverages and additional services are included.

Six Lodges. Different Ways to Experience Karongwe.

Not every guest wants the same safari.

Some are travelling as a couple, others with family or friends. Some prefer an intimate lodge, while others are looking for a different atmosphere or accommodation style.

Karongwe’s six distinctive lodges offer a choice of settings, accommodation and rates, all within the same private reserve.

From five-star stays to four-star safari accommodation, guests can choose a lodge that suits their trip while experiencing the same remarkable landscape.

What’s New for All-Inclusive Safaris at Karongwe in 2027?

For selected 2027 packages, Karongwe is expanding its all-inclusive offering, bringing more of the safari experience into the rate.

The additions include scheduled transfers for qualifying bookings and selected beverages at five-star lodges, alongside the accommodation, dining and guided game viewing that form the foundation of a Karongwe stay.

Stay and Dine

The 2027 all-inclusive offering includes accommodation, a welcome drink on arrival, all meals, teas, coffees, bottled water and snacks.

From your first welcome to your final meal, the essentials of your stay are taken care of.

Safari, Included

Dawn and dusk safaris in open game-drive vehicles are included, along with two sundowner drinks per person on the dusk safari.

Each drive offers a different perspective on Karongwe’s landscape, from the first light of morning to the changing activity of the bush as evening approaches.

Scheduled Transfers from Hoedspruit

Selected 2027 packages include scheduled transfers from Hoedspruit Airport and Southern Boom Gate.

Scheduled airport transfers apply to qualifying FIT guests and groups of up to six rooms or 12 guests.

This removes another arrangement from the journey, allowing qualifying guests to move from their arrival point to the reserve with their transfers already organised.

Selected Beverages at Five-Star Lodges

For qualifying 2027 packages, selected local beers, wines, spirits and soft drinks are included at Karongwe’s five-star properties:

  • Becks Safari Lodge
  • Kuname Safari Lodge
  • River Safari Lodge
  • Noka House
  • Sepela Explorer Camp, opening in 2027

Karongwe’s four-star lodges, Chisomo Safari Camp and Shiduli Safari Lodge, receive the expanded scheduled-transfer offering on qualifying 2027 packages, but not the five-star all-inclusive beverage offering.

What Else Is Included?

The 2027 offering also includes limited Wi-Fi access at the lodges, reserve fees unless otherwise communicated at the time of booking, and VAT in accordance with SARS regulations.

All expanded inclusions apply to selected 2027 packages and are subject to the applicable terms and conditions.

More included. Less to arrange. More to look forward to.

What Might Cost Extra on an All-Inclusive Safari?

All-inclusive doesn’t necessarily mean every possible experience is included in your rate.

At Karongwe, guests can choose from additional experiences that extend their time in the Lowveld, subject to availability and the applicable package.

These may include guided bush walks, spa and wellness treatments, photographic hide experiences, gin tasting, community visits, hot-air ballooning, scenic helicopter flights and excursions to nearby attractions.

Families can also enquire about the Little Paws Children’s Programme, which is available at an additional cost and subject to lodge-specific age policies.

Special arrangements for celebrations, private experiences and certain activities may also incur additional charges.

Guests should confirm their package inclusions, optional activity costs and any applicable gratuities before arrival. Advance booking is recommended for experiences with limited availability.

The Value of Knowing What’s Included

A safari is easier to enjoy when you’re not calculating the cost of every part of it.

When meals and scheduled game drives are already part of your stay, there is less to organise each day.

You can return from your morning drive knowing breakfast is waiting. Spend the afternoon at the lodge without planning where to eat next. Then head out again with your guide and tracker as the day begins to cool.

For qualifying 2027 bookings, the expanded beverage and transfer inclusions bring additional convenience to the experience.

The value of an all-inclusive safari isn’t simply the number of things included in the rate.

It’s having the different parts of your stay brought together, with fewer arrangements to make once you arrive.

How to Compare Safari Rates Before You Book

When comparing Big Five safari prices in South Africa, look beyond the nightly rate and ask a few practical questions.

  • Are morning and afternoon game drives included?
  • Which meals and beverages are covered?
  • Are conservation fees and transfers included or charged separately?
  • Are there additional charges for any activities you’d like to experience?
  • Does the quoted rate apply to your preferred travel dates and room category?
  • Are there different inclusions for four-star and five-star accommodation?

Comparing the complete cost of your intended stay will give you a clearer picture of the value each safari offers.

Your Safari, From the First Drive to the Last

The first morning drive. Breakfast back at the lodge. An afternoon spent beside the pool before heading into the bush again. Dinner, with the sounds of the reserve carrying into the evening.

At Karongwe, these aren’t separate experiences to piece together. They’re the rhythm of your stay.

With six distinctive lodges, twice-daily guided game drives and an all-inclusive offering that is expanding for 2027, you can choose the stay that suits you while knowing what your rate covers.
